Refractive surgery is a solution for correcting vision disorders such as myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. But it's not for everyone. At the Centre Nord Vaudois d’Ophtalmologie, our patients' safety and well-being come first. That's why a rigorous pre-operative assessment is essential to determine whether this procedure is right for you.
Eligibility criteria for refractive surgery
1. Stable vision
Vision stability is a key criterion. If your optical correction has changed in the past year, this indicates that your vision has not yet stabilized, and that you should wait before opting for refractive surgery.
2. Be of legal age
Refractive surgery is recommended for patients aged 18 and over. Before this age, the eye is still developing, making the results of the operation less predictable.
3. No specific eye disease
Some eye pathologies make surgery impossible or risky, and we take no risks. The pre-operative check-up enables us to make a complete assessment of your eyes and to detect any potential contraindications to refractive surgery.
4. A sufficiently thick cornea
Refractive surgery acts directly on the cornea, reshaping it. If the cornea is too thin, the procedure can weaken the eye.
5. Be in good general health
Certain illnesses or medical treatments can complicate healing or increase the risk of complications.
Why is a pre-operative check-up essential?
At CNVO, the pre-operative check-up is an essential step. During this in-depth examination, we :
- We assess your eligibility with detailed tests and a thorough ophthalmological check-up.
- Choose the surgical technique best suited to the nature and intensity of your visual defect (if you are eligible for surgery).
- Let's discuss your expectations and potential results.
- We eliminate any risk factors that could compromise your safety or the success of the procedure.
This assessment not only guarantees optimal results, but above all ensures that the operation will be carried out under safe and appropriate conditions.
What if I'm not eligible?
If refractive surgery is not an option for you, other solutions may be considered, such as :
- Wearing specialized contact lenses.
- Adapted corrective lenses.
- A "phake" intra-ocular implant, which involves placing a small corrective lens inside the eye, without operating on the crystalline lens.
- Specific treatments for certain eye diseases.
Our specialists are here to guide you towards the best solution for your needs.
Safety first!
Refractive surgery is a major advance in the field of ophthalmology, but it must be performed with rigor and care. At CNVO, we put the safety and well-being of our patients first: if we find a reason not to operate, it's simple: we don't operate. On the other hand, if you're a good candidate, we'll do everything we can to make your operation a success.
